The first banknotes bearing King Charles’ image have been released by the Bank of England.
Beginning in the middle of 2024, the notes will gradually replace those that feature his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
Charles is depicted on the front of the new £5, £10, £20, and £50 polymer banknotes, as well as in a cameo appearance in a transparent security window. Other than that, they are identical to the current layouts.
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey remarked, “I am quite delighted that the bank is presenting the design of our new banknotes, which will include an image of King Charles III.”
“This is a significant moment, as the King is only the second monarch to feature on our banknotes. People will be able to use these new notes as they start to enter circulation in 2024.”
The Queen first appeared on the Bank of England’s banknotes in 1960.
Notes featuring the Queen will remain legal tender and the bank will only withdraw them when they are worn out, so they could remain in circulation for years.
