BREAKING: Anglican Communion lost Archbishop of Lagos Diocese Olumakaiye at 53


Most Reverend Humphrey Olumakaiye, the Archbishop of Lagos Province, Anglican Communion, and Bishop of Lagos Diocese, has passed away at 53.

The Chancellor, Justice Adedayo Oyebanji, and the Synod Secretary, Ven. Segun Ladeinde, co-signed a statement that read, “His Episcopal sojourn in the Province and later the Diocese of Lagos was marked by phenomenal, physical, and spiritual developments, for which all of us shall remain very proud.

“We shall keep you informed when detailed Funeral obsequies arrangements develop and are made public,” the statement reads.

Olumakaiye, who was born on January 28, 1969, was elected for translation into the Diocese of Lagos on February 6, 2018, and on July 30, 2018, at the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, Lagos, he was installed as the eighth Bishop of Lagos.

He also assumed the role as Archbishop of the Province of Lagos on September 25, 2021, and on November 7 of that year, he was formally installed in the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Gwarimpa.

Here are ten facts about the late Olumakaiye:

1. He served as the Bishop of Lagos and the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos (Anglican Communion) until his death in 2018. Prior to that, he served as the Bishop of Osun North-East for the Church of Nigeria.

2. On November 7, 2021, in the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja’s Cathedral Church of Advent, Life Camp, he was installed as the Archbishop of Lagos Ecclesiastical Province.

3. The Venerable and Mrs. T.A. Olumakaiye welcomed Olumakaiye into the world on January 28, 1969 in Okene.

4. The late Archbishop was a native of the town of Idanre in the state of Ondo.

5. His education began in 1975 at St. Michael’s Primary School in Esie, and it continued in 1982 at Government Secondary School in Omu-Aran, Kwara State.

6. He left Omu-Aran in 1983 and finished his secondary school in 1986 at Cherubim Seraphim Secondary School in Ilorin.

7. Between 1991 and 1993, he earned his first degree in religious studies from the University of Ibadan, and in 2001, he earned his master’s degree in the same field. He went on to finish his education at the same university, earning a doctorate in Church History and Doctrine.

8. He was ordained as a priest by E.A. Ademowo, Bishop of the Ilesha Diocese, in December of the same year that he was made a deacon. This came after Olumakaiye had completed his training and Immanuel College of Theology degree.

9. In June 1993, he began serving as a priest at Christ the Saviour Anglican Church in Cappa, Ilesa, Osun State.

10. Olumakaiye, who is 40 years old, was elected bishop on May 22, 2009; he was ordained a bishop on July 12, 2009, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state; and on July 16, 2009, he was installed as the first bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Osun North-East at the Cathedral Church of St. Philip’s in Otan Ayegbaju.

Olumakaiye was married to Motunrayo Funke, a professor and the former head of the nutrition and consumer sciences department of the faculty of agriculture at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, until his passing. Their son, Richard Tunbamise, was born.
