Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, has filed a lawsuit against Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the director general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), for his part in what he calls Kanu’s “false detention” in Kenya for eight days.
Kanu filed the lawsuit in Umuahia’s Abia State High Court. Kanu is requesting N20 billion in general and exemplary damages for the breach of his rights, among other things.
Kanu’s special counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, told SaharaReporters that newly discovered evidence implicating Mr. Abubakar outside of the infamous extraordinary rendition prompted the legal action. He filed the lawsuit on Wednesday, November 23.
In reference to the several lawsuits that have resulted from Kanu’s performance, Ejimakor stated that “this is the first against Ahmed Abubakar, either in his personal or official capacity.”
The claimant (Kanu) was falsely imprisoned, according to Ejimakor, who added that the Kenyan government has categorically and publicly denied any involvement in the claimant’s arrest and detention in Kenya. A copy of the lawsuit was provided to SaharaReporters.
He cited the Federal High Court’s ruling from October 26, 2022, in a case involving the claimant’s fundamental rights filed against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and others, which stated:
“I declare that the manner of the Applicant’s arrest and detention in Kenya, his continued detention in Abuja, his exposure to physical and mental trauma by the Respondents, and the inhuman and degrading treatment meted out to the Applicant constitutes a brazen violation.”
