Lucid Motors has announced its collaboration with Tesla, allowing Lucid’s electric vehicles to plug into over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America, starting in 2025. This development marks Lucid Motors as the latest addition to a growing list of companies pledging support for the North American Charging Standard (NACS), also known as the Tesla charging standard.
Lucid Motors plans to offer its customers access to a NACS adapter for its current vehicles, equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS), by 2025. Additionally, the company intends to integrate NACS ports directly into its EVs within the same year, eliminating the need for adapters in newer models.
Earlier this year, Ford became the trailblazer by announcing its intention to grant its customers access to Tesla Superchargers following efforts by the White House to persuade Tesla to share its charging network with other automakers. Subsequently, several prominent automotive companies, including Mercedes, Volvo, Polestar, Honda, Toyota (and Lexus), BMW, Hyundai, and Subaru, joined the initiative. They have all committed to providing their customers with NACS adapters and incorporating the standard into their vehicles within the next two years.
Lucid Motors’ decision to embrace the NACS is particularly noteworthy due to the unique charging architecture of its vehicles. Lucid EVs employ a 900-volt charging system, which the company touted as the basis for its promotion of the Lucid Air as the “fastest charging electric vehicle ever.” While most Superchargers currently operate at around 500 volts, Tesla has started deploying V4 Superchargers in the US, offering higher voltage charging. Although this may not fully capitalize on Lucid’s 900-volt capability, the collaboration with Tesla’s network could still provide significant benefits for potential customers.
Lucid Motors CEO, Peter Rawlinson, emphasized the importance of adopting NACS, stating, “[a]dopting NACS is an important next step to providing [its] customers with expanded access to reliable and convenient charging solutions for their Lucid vehicles.” The move underscores the industry’s collective efforts to create a seamless and accessible charging experience for EV owners, further driving the adoption of electric vehicles across North America.
