As 26th March which is the day set for the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) approaches, Governor of Borno State his Excellency Umara Babagana Zulum has thrown his weight heavily behind the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, an else while Governor of Benue State and Former Senate Minority Leader, Distinguished Senator George Akume to making sure he emerged as the party’s National Chairman.
Zulum believes Akume is the right person for the job and for fairness a Christian is supposed to become the party’s next Chairman to balance the power sharing.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has zoned the party’s National Chairmanship position to the North-Central and by religious affiliation Akume happened to be the only Christian in the race.
Governor Zulum condemned the idea that top positions in the party be given to Muslims. He therefore said;
“APC is not a party for the Muslims alone, it is a party for both the Muslims and Christians so for fair play Akume should be our consensus candidate.”
He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari and all APC Governors Nationwide to team up in support of Senator George Akume to emerge as the party’s next National Chairman.
Also commenting on the development is Akume’s loyalist from Benue State, Chief Simon Shango who was at the party’s National Secretariat to submit Akume’s expression of interest and nomination forms on behalf of the Minister. Shango said, I am so overwhelmed to hear Governor Babagana Umara Zulum come out publically to throw his weight behind Senator George Akume to emerge as the next Chairman of our great party at the National level.
Shango went on to say “we are so certain that Senator George Akume will be the party’s next National Chairman because the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) has assured us of a level playing group for all candidates so we will definitely smile at the end of the National Convention.
