The Federal Government has announced the commencement of a monthly transfer of N20 billion to two million vulnerable Nigerians through it’s Basic and Conditional Cash Transfer programmes.
Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, the honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq stated that each of the two million beneficiaries will be paid a monthly stipend of N5,000 under the Basic Cash transfer and another N5,000 will also be added from the ongoing Conditional Cash Transfer programmes respectively.
The Humanitarian Minister revealed further that this has become necessary in order to complement the efforts and desire of Mr. President to lift 100 million extremely poor Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.
NewsWay reports that, a document on the strategic roadmap and activities of the Humanitarian Ministry revealed that beneficiaries of the Cash Transfer programmes has been on the increase since it’s launch in 2018.
From the report it was obtained that the number of beneficiaries in the year 2018 stood at less than one million drawn across 19 states. In the following year (2019) the number of beneficiaries also increased and five more States were added making the number of states 24. Presently (2022) the report records that 1.6 million beneficiaries has been drawn across all the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Sadiya pointed out that, by June this year, 400,000 new beneficiaries will be added to bring the number of beneficiaries to a round figure of two million to be drawn across the country.
According to the Minister, Rapid Response Register (RRR) was designed as a shock-responsive social register mainly to identify the urban poor (those whose account balances were less than N5,000) and were affected by the effects of COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, the Minister said about 850,000 Nigerians have been receiving the sum of N5,000 monthly stipends via the inter-bank settlement system.
