HIV isn’t hereditary, it is an acquired disease through sexual intercourse with an infected person, through blood transfusion, punctures or through cuts.

HIV can be passed on from mother to child, this is called perinatal transmission which is passed on to the child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.

Transmission from mother to child can be prevented through treatment with a combination of “anti retroviral therapy” (HIV medicine). Elective Cesarean Section (ECS) can be carried out on a mother to reduce the risk of mother to child transmission of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

A mother may choose not to breastfeed her child to avoid HIV transmission.

Taking anti HIV drugs during pregnancy and administrating it to a new born after birth for a few weeks can help avoid HIV transmission.
