According to NBC News, Democrats will maintain their razor-thin majority in the U.S. Senate, fending off a full-scale attempt by Republicans to use economic unpredictability and public unhappiness to seize control of the upper chamber of Congress.
In the upcoming Congress, the party will control at least 50 Senate seats thanks to incumbents holding onto their seats in crucial contests and Democratic Lt. Governor John Fetterman flipping the GOP-held seat in Pennsylvania. A runoff will be held on December 6 to determine the winner of one uncalled contest, in which Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia is defending his seat against Republican Herschel Walker. Currently, Democrats hold a 50/50 majority in the Senate thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote.
Analysts believed the race for the Senate to be a virtual toss-up going into Election Day, despite the fact that the GOP had some significant advantages over Democrats throughout the cycle. NBC predicted that after days of counting in both states, incumbent Sens. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada won their hotly contested campaigns, securing the chamber for Democrats.
Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader in the Senate, referred to the election results as “a win and vindication for Democrats” in a tweet.
Republicans had hoped for a “red wave” to sweep Democrats out of power in both houses of the legislature, and many had openly expressed this expectation.
A change in congressional leadership would have jeopardized President Joe Biden’s ability to progress important appointments for his remaining two years in office as well as his legislative agenda.
But the wave never showed up. Many analysts predicted that Biden’s unpopularity, combined with historical electoral trends and persistently high inflation, could result in a rout for the party in power. However, Democratic candidates across the board outperformed their predictions.
