The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) has revealed that it has launched a plan to immunize 50% of Nigerians, aged 18 and over, by January 31, 2022.
Dr. Faisal Shuaib, announced on thursday at the NEC virtual meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He revealed that Nigeria has received more than 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines from COVAX, the AU and some countries, which would be enough to boost immunization of 50% of the affected population.
Shuaib said, “The total eligible population of Nigerians for the vaccine is over 111 million.” Given the availability of vaccines, we have started rolling out a plan to immunize 50 percent of Nigerians, aged 18 and over, by Jan. 31, 2022.
The head of the NPHCDA added that there would be an increase of more than 3,000 health facilities nationwide.
Dr. Ifedayo Adetifa, Managing Director of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), in another presentation, urged Nigerians to keep the epidemic visible through testing, continuing to encourage adherence to control measures to encourage vaccination and to fight against vaccine hesitation.
He added that the Delta variant of COVID19 was still the dominant strain of concern in the country.
