Religion is a belief and worship of a supreme being controlling power especially God or gods.

The history of religion in the world began with the invention of writing about 5,220 years ago (3200 BC), although religion existed prior to the advent of written records. The concept of “religion” was formed in the 16th and 17th centuries. 

Hinduism

Hinduism is the oldest religion according to Wikipedia with roots and customs dating back more than 4,000 years. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Today with about 900 million followers, Hinduism is the third largest religion beside Christianity and Islam. Roughly 95 percent of world’s Hindus live in India. 

Classification and types of the present Religion

The three most popular religions in the world are Christianity, Islam and Hinduism but religions may be classified into small number of major groups, this theory of classification dated back to the 18th century with the aim of acknowledging the relative levels of civility in diverse societies, though the practice has since fallen into disrepute in many contemporary cultures. The other types of religion aside Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism are; Buddhism, Baha’i, Confucianism, Jainism, Judaism, Shinto, sikhism, Taoism and Zoroastrianism. 

Religion is also classified into the following; polytheism, Monotheism, and Animism. 

Polytheism is the belief systems of the ancient Greeks and Romans, they are entitled to worship as many gods or dieties as they want.

Monotheism is associated with Judaism and Islam they worship a single god. 

Animism are a group of people who worship, animals, plants, great waters, the natural world and earthly bodies.

The history of religion is not specific as there are disputes about when or where exactly religion started.

Religion in the present age in Nigeria

Prior to the coming of Christianity in Nigeria, Nigerians had long believed in juju, akombo, ogboni, layan zana and several other gods. They pay homage to these gods and worshipped them as though they were the unseen powers behind their living or lives.

The Dutch brought the present Religion of Christianity to us in Nigeria. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); They thought us a new Faith and made us believe that there exist a Trinity in one supreme being that actually gives lives and he himself is molded like our native idols. Our parents believed them and we followed the same path as our forefathers made us to believe.

Today Christianity has taken the lead in Nigeria enveloping almost all sectors.
