The 2024 Pi Commerce Hackathon has concluded, and the results are in! The Pi Core Team is delighted to recognize two winning apps and two honorable mentions that have shown exceptional promise in supporting local Pi commerce worldwide. Let’s delve into the details of this exciting event and celebrate the innovation within the Pi community.
The goal of the Pi Commerce Hackathon was to foster the development of apps that facilitate local Pi commerce, a need highlighted by the Pioneer community during PiFest in December of the previous year. PiFest garnered significant global engagement, with over 21,000 responses from Pioneers across 155 countries and regions, underscoring the demand for solutions to support Pi Network on a local level.
Two winning apps emerged from the hackathon: Map of Pi and PyNook. These platforms cater to both Pioneers and merchants, offering intuitive interfaces for discovering nearby businesses that accept Pi and providing merchants with user-friendly storefronts. What sets them apart is their focus on empowering local Pi commerce and their utilization of the Pi Open Source (PiOS) license, allowing for global contributions to their growth and localization.
Map of Pi impressed with its user-friendly map interface, enabling users to easily locate nearby Pi-accepting businesses. The team behind Map of Pi is diligently working on enhancing the app’s features, including QR codes and menu items, with plans for a comprehensive launch post-Pi Day.
PyNook, on the other hand, provides a clear app centered around connecting merchants and Pioneers. With features like multiple language options and a searchable list of businesses, PyNook aims to facilitate global accessibility and streamline Pi commerce interactions.
Both winning teams are committed to further developing their apps beyond the hackathon, ensuring their long-term viability and usability within the Pi ecosystem.
In addition to the winners, two apps received honorable mentions: EasyGoods and City for Pi. EasyGoods, following the PiOS license closely, has made notable progress in creating a compelling app interface for businesses and Pioneers. Meanwhile, City for Pi impressed with its advanced in-app functionality and creative design, though it aims to further support local commerce and the discoverability of Pi merchants.
