The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized the Youth Party (YP) as a registered political party, adding to the total number of registered parties in Nigeria, which now stands at 19.
In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, the commission confirmed that the recognition was in compliance with a judgment from the Supreme Court. The decision was made during a meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
Okoye highlighted the background of the case, stating that the Youth Party was initially registered on August 16, 2018, following a judgment by the Federal High Court on October 16, 2017.
The INEC had earlier taken steps to deregister some political parties in accordance with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). However, the Youth Party approached the Federal High Court and successfully obtained an Order restraining the Commission from deregistering it.
The case then went through the appellate process, with the Court of Appeal overturning the Federal High Court’s Order. Eventually, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the party and set aside its deregistration.
Following the Supreme Court’s judgment, INEC engaged in discussions with Youth Party officials to establish the modalities for its operations in accordance with the Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Regulations and Guidelines of the commission.

Consequently, the commission has now officially recognized the Youth Party as the 19th political party in Nigeria, granting it all the rights and privileges accorded to registered political parties in the country.
