Jamaica’s new CBDC designed in the shape of the national fruit. |
The African Diaspora 6th Region simply called the ECO-6 has most of Caribbean American Nations as Member States with Jamaica inclusive.
The ECO-6 adopted the Lumi as its single Regional currency to be used within and outside the Region including the Jamaica which sometime ago declared its designer wanted, however the Queen Elizabeth’s lead common wealth member nation of Jamaica, the first member state of the ECO-6 to begin the journey on the path of Lumi currency conversion within the ECO-6 Region.
Jamaica having intensively reviewed and observed the success of the Lumi currency as a CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) has taken the giant step ahead of other ECO-6 Member States to design its CBDC in a unique and special way.
The Bank of Jamaica left the name, logo and tagline of the digital currency as a competition to the public where Ms. Ashley Payne emerged winner suggesting CBDC’s name as JAM-DEX (Jamaican Digital Exchange) and the tagline as “NO CASH, NO PROBLEM”. She won the 600k Jamaican dollar prize (equivalent of $3840) and also her JAM-DEX wallet will be credited with additional 50k.
The Bank of Jamaica in a statement said, they wanted a unique CBDC that they can identify their people with easily and Ashley Payne’s views just gave us what we’ve long to have.
“We sought something that matched the authentic ‘Jamaican-nes’ of the name and tagline while being simultaneously simple and distinctively bold as an easily recognizable visual element.”
As a CBDC in the Region of ECO-6, the Lumi stimulus beneficiaries from Jamaica may be the first to convert the Lumi to a national CBDC.
The huddle faced by all Lumi beneficiaries is bothered mainly on the inability to convert the digital currency to a fiat currency that can be used easily.
Though it’s Authorities have assured beneficiaries of a smooth landing probably this year as they strive to integrate the Lumi into several national economies in the Continental Africa and the Diaspora as well.
