Node Participation On the Pi Network: What Pioneers Should Know

The Pi Network is a mobile-first cryptocurrency project that is still under development. However, the Pi Core Team has been working on a number of features and enhancements to the Pi Network, including the development of a node software that can be run on computers.

There are currently three levels of participation for Pioneers to use the Pi Node software on their computers:

  1. Computer App
    • This refers to only using the desktop Pi App interface of the node software.
    • It enables Pioneers who want to interact with the Pi app from their computers, so it has similar functionalities to the mobile app.
    • For example, many Pioneers have previously expressed that they want to be able to chat on Pi through their computers rather than phones. Hence, the Core Team designed the desktop Pi App interface on Pi Node software and combined this interface with the node software.
    • Also, in the future, as more functionalities are added to the Pi App, e.g. Apps Platform and the various apps on the platform, some of them might be easier to access through the desktop interface than the mobile application.
  2. Node
    • This means that Pioneers access the node interface, finish installing necessary technical preparations based on instructions, and switch on/off the node interface to make their computer available to run the blockchain component after being selected to be a Node.
    • Although they don’t participate in the consensus, they verify the validity of the blockchain and submit transactions to get recorded on the blockchain.
    • In the future when Pi’s blockchains expand to more than securing a ledger, Nodes will expand to include computers opting in to contribute to collective hardware resources of the network, such as computation, storage, and bandwidth.
  3. SuperNode
    • SuperNodes are the backbone of Pi’s Blockchain.
    • They are responsible for reaching a consensus based on the algorithm to write the right transaction on the Pi ledger, in addition to all the responsibilities that a node performs.
    • They’re also responsible for making sure other SuperNodes and Nodes get the latest state of the blockchain.
    • SuperNodes also utilize the node interface and are initially selected by the Core Team.
    • They need to be connected to the network 24/7 and have a reliable internet connection.

It is important to note that the Pi Node software is still under development and there are some known issues that are being addressed by the Core Team. Additionally, the Core Team has not yet announced when the Pi Node software will be available to all Pioneers.

However, the development of the Pi Node software is a significant milestone for the Pi Network. It will allow Pioneers to participate in the Pi Network in a more meaningful way and help to decentralize the network.

Benefits of Participating in Node Levels

There are a number of benefits to participating in the different node levels in the Pi Network.

Computer App

  • Access to the Pi App on computers
  • Ability to interact with the Pi Network in a more desktop-friendly way
  • Potential to access new features and functionalities before they are available on the mobile app

Node

  • Help to decentralize the Pi Network
  • Secure the Pi blockchain
  • Verify transactions and submit them to the blockchain
  • Potential to earn rewards in the future

SuperNode

  • All of the benefits of being a Node
  • Help to reach consensus and write transactions to the Pi ledger
  • Make sure other SuperNodes and Nodes get the latest state of the blockchain
  • Potential to earn greater rewards than Nodes in the future

How to Participate in Node Levels

The Pi Core Team has not yet announced when the Pi Node software will be available to all Pioneers. However, the Core Team has stated that it will be available in a phased rollout.

In the meantime, Pioneers can prepare to participate in node levels by:

  • Ensuring that they have a computer that meets the system requirements for the Pi Node software
  • Staying up-to-date on the latest news and announcements from the Pi Core Team
  • Joining the Pi Node community on Discord or Telegram

Additional Thoughts on the Value of Node Participation

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, there are a few other reasons why node participation in the Pi Network could be valuable:

  • Early access to new features and functionalities. The Pi Core Team has stated that Pioneers who participate in node levels may be given early access to new features and functionalities on the Pi Network. This could be a valuable benefit for Pioneers who want to be on the cutting edge of the Pi Network ecosystem.
  • Increased influence in the Pi Network community. Pioneers who participate in node levels may have a greater say in the development of the Pi Network. The Pi Core Team has stated that it is committed to decentralizing the Pi Network and giving Pioneers a voice in its development.   • Potential to earn rewards. The Pi Core Team has not yet announced any specific rewards for node participation. However, the Core Team has stated that it is considering ways to reward Pioneers who participate in node levels. Therefore, there is the potential to earn rewards for participating in node levels in the future.
