Diabetes also known as diabetes mellitus is one of the major causes of kidney failure, limb amputation, blindness, stroke and heart failure, diabetes is recorded as the seventh leading cause of death in the united states and the tenth leading cause of death globally.
Every year the number of people with diabetes increases massively.
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood sugar (blood glucose) is too high.
Diabetes has basically four types
1. Type 1 diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes is a persisting condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin, this kind of diabetes happens when your immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. This diabetes isn’t curable but can be managed with proper treatments.
2. Type 2 diabetes is a condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose) with type 2 diabetes the body either resist insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin.
The main difference between type 1 and 2 diabetes is that type 1 is a genetic disorder that usually show up at the early stage of one’s life but the latter is diet based and develops later on in life. A lot of people would compare which of the afor mentioned diabetes is more dangerous, but neither of them is better, if not taken proper care of, your cells would begin to wither.
3. Gestational diabetes is a type of high blood sugar affecting women during pregnancy, women who suffer gestational diabetes may develop type 2 diabetes later on in life. This type of diabetes may happen as a result of the body’s inability to produce enough insulin during pregnancy. If this type of diabetes goes untreated, it could cause problems for the unborn baby and theirs a risk of high blood pressure and preeclampsia (a serious complication of pregnancy that causes high blood pressure). This could put the life of the child and mother at risk so it is advisable to have a caesarian section for safe delivery. Gestational diabetes usually goes away when the mother delivers.
Some symptoms of this type of diabetes may include, vaginal infections, tiredness, sugar in urine, abnormal thirst, frequent need to urinate.
4. Prediabetes also known as impaired glucose tolerance is a diabetes in which blood sugar is high but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes but without proper treatments it could become a type 2 diabetes in 10 years time.
