Doctor Remanded in Correctional Facility for Allegedly Raping Patient in Kwara State

In a shocking development, a medical director in Ilorin, Kwara State, has been accused of raping a patient who was receiving treatment at his hospital. Dr Ayodele Joseph, the medical director of Ayodele Hospital, Ilorin, has been remanded in a correctional facility by an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court for allegedly committing the heinous crime.

The police First Information Report (FIR) indicates that Dr Joseph sedated the victim, who was a nurse, before having sexual intercourse with her without her consent. The victim had visited the hospital for medical treatment when the unfortunate incident happened.

“The nurse went to the hospital for medical treatment when the doctor, who claimed to be having 27 years experience in medical field, took advantage of her under sedation,” the FIR stated.

The report further revealed that investigation into the matter led to the discovery of a video recording that captured the sexual assault. Medical tests were also conducted, confirming that the victim was indeed assaulted and raped.

Following the investigation, Dr Joseph was arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with rape. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Inspector Nasir Yusuf, argued that the offense was punishable under Section 252 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria. The Magistrate, Mariam Ibrahim, ordered that the accused be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the case till May 26, 2023.

This incident has generated widespread condemnation from members of the public, with many calling for swift justice to be served. It is particularly disturbing that a medical practitioner, who is supposed to uphold the highest ethical standards, could allegedly engage in such a reprehensible act.

The authorities must ensure that justice is done in this case, and that the victim is given the support and care she needs to recover from this traumatic experience.
